1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "And you can't remember what the part is like?"
2. "Of course, you'll do," said Drouet, who, in his efforts toenthuse Carrie, had interested himself. "Do you think I'd comehome here and urge you to do something that I didn't think youwould make a success of? You can act all right. It'll be goodfor you."
3. "Mayhew won't open the safe till nine," he thought. "They can'tget on my track before noon."
4. "Oh, he's a nice man. He's manager of Fitzgerald and Moy's."
5. "I think I'll sleep alone to-night. I have a headache."
6. Carrie looked about her, after she had drunk a tinful of waterfrom a bucket in one corner, for a place to sit and eat. Theother girls had ranged themselves about the windows or the work-benches of those of the men who had gone out. She saw no placewhich did not hold a couple or a group of girls, and being tootimid to think of intruding herself, she sought out her machineand, seated upon her stool, opened her lunch on her lap. Thereshe sat listening to the chatter and comment about her. It was,for the most part, silly and graced by the current slang.Several of the men in the room exchanged compliments with thegirls at long range.

1. Each day thereafter brought its cares. She found it was not sucha wonderful thing to be in the chorus, and she also learned thather salary would be twelve dollars a week. After a few days shehad her first sight of those high and mighties--the leadingladies and gentlemen. She saw that they were privileged anddeferred to. She was nothing--absolutely nothing at all.
2. "Deal me a hand," he said at the beginning of a new shuffle. Hepulled up a chair and studied his cards. Those playing made thatquiet study of him which is so unapparent, and yet invariably sosearching.
3. "Oh, no," she said remorsefully, her tone reflecting some of herown success and more of her helplessness, "you never will."
4. Drouet followed him with his eyes, much interested.
5. "George is a fine fellow," said Drouet, rather gratified by hisconception of the manager's interest. "Come on and we'll go outto dinner."
6. The manager looked at his lovely prize, so beautiful, so winsome,so difficult to be won, and made strange resolutions. Hispassion had gotten to that stage now where it was no longercoloured with reason. He did not trouble over little barriers ofthis sort in the face of so much loveliness. He would accept thesituation with all its difficulties; he would not try to answerthe objections which cold truth thrust upon him. He wouldpromise anything, everything, and trust to fortune to disentanglehim. He would make a try for Paradise, whatever might be theresult. He would be happy, by the Lord, if it cost all honestyof statement, all abandonment of truth.

1. "Oh, yes, sir. I know her."
2. "He says there's an answer expected," she explained.
3. "I saw some of the brewery people to-day," said Hurstwood. "Oneman told me he'd try to make a place for me in two or threeweeks."
4. "You didn't have any right to want me," she answered, strikingcleanly home.
5. He walked over and looked out. It was an ambulance, backing in.
6. "You've got to get the knack of working both arms at once," hesaid. "It takes a little practice."

1. As the waiter bowed and scraped about, felt the dishes to see ifthey were hot enough, brought spoons and forks, and did all thoselittle attentive things calculated to impress the luxury of thesituation upon the diner, Ames also leaned slightly to one sideand told her of Indianapolis in an intelligent way. He reallyhad a very bright mind, which was finding its chief developmentin electrical knowledge. His sympathies for other forms ofinformation, however, and for types of people, were quick andwarm. The red glow on his head gave it a sandy tinge and put abright glint in his eye. Carrie noticed all these things as heleaned toward her and felt exceedingly young. This man was farahead of her. He seemed wiser than Hurstwood, saner and brighterthan Drouet. He seemed innocent and clean, and she thought thathe was exceedingly pleasant. She noticed, also, that hisinterest in her was a far-off one. She was not in his life, norany of the things that touched his life, and yet now, as he spokeof these things, they appealed to her.
2. "I only got a half-pound of steak," he said, coming in oneafternoon with his papers. "We never seem to eat very much."
3. Carrie did not go very far, after all. She returned and stood inthe door. The next day they went out to Garfield Park, but itdid not please her. She did not look well enough. In the shopnext day she heard the highly coloured reports which girls giveof their trivial amusements. They had been happy. On severaldays it rained and she used up car fare. One night she gotthoroughly soaked, going to catch the car at Van Buren Street. All that evening she sat alone in the front room looking out uponthe street, where the lights were reflected on the wet pavements, thinking. She had imagination enough to be moody.
4、 "No," he answered, "they're not quite ready yet. I thinksomething will come of that, though."
5、 Nevertheless, wakened out of her melancholia and called to thedinner table, she changed her mind. A little food in the stomachdoes wonders. She went again, and in so doing temporarilyrecovered her equanimity. The great awakening blow had, however, been delivered. As often as she might recover from thesediscontented thoughts now, they would occur again. Time andrepetition--ah, the wonder of it! The dropping water and thesolid stone--how utterly it yields at last!

"I feel funny," he answered. They looked at one another for a moment, and then Drouet plungeddesperately into his subject.

Doing her simple part, Carrie gradually realised the meaning ofthe applause which was for her, and it was sweet. She feltmildly guilty of something--perhaps unworthiness. When herassociates addressed her in the wings she only smiled weakly. The pride and daring of place were not for her. It never oncecrossed her mind to be reserved or haughty--to be other than shehad been. After the performances she rode to her room with Lola,in a carriage provided.

Gradually the deference and congratulation gave her a mentalappreciation of her state. She was no longer ordered, butrequested, and that politely. The other members of the castlooked at her enviously as she came out arrayed in her simplehabit, which she wore all through the play. All those who hadsupposedly been her equals and superiors now smiled the smile ofsociability, as much as to say: "How friendly we have alwaysbeen." Only the star comedian whose part had been so deeplyinjured stalked by himself. Figuratively, he could not kiss thehand that smote him.
